Battle of the Books 2005
Get ready for the greatest battle of the year, coming to the Schoolcraft High School Performing Arts Center. On Saturday, February 5, 2005, beginning at 10 am, twenty-eight teams of fourth, fifth and sixth graders from Schoolcraft and Vicksburg will compete for the chance to go on to the Grand Battle. The winner of the Grand Battle will have the honor of getting their team name on the traveling trophy, provided by Felpausch Food, which will be displayed in the team's school library.

The Battle of the Books, sponsored by the Schoolcraft Community Library, began 11 years ago with only 6 teams, and has continued to attract more and more young readers over the years. Each team collectively reads twelve books that are pre-selected by the Schoolcraft Children's Librarian, Bobbi Truesdell. The long awaited booklist was released in October 2004, and the teams, coached by parents or teachers, have been reading up a storm ever since.

The teams battle by answering 21 questions about the twelve books. The readers earn points by answering each question correctly and by providing the correct author and spelling of the author's last name. The four teams with the most points in each of the four preliminary battles proceed to the semi final battles the same day. Two teams will continue on to the Grand Battle on Thursday, February 10 at 7:00 pm.

Prize packets from area sponsors, including TCBY, Hungry Howie's, Burger King, Fazoli's, Steak n'Shake, Little Caesar's and Midwest Printing & Promotions, are given to each team member who participates. Grand Prize winners and runners up will receive gift certificates to Barnes and Nobel provided by the Schoolcraft Friends of the Library and The Neighborhood Dry Cleaners.

Come and join us for the Battle and see what the excitement is all about.

Kid's Book Corner
Hey kids, looking for a fun adventure?
Check out the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler ...
Adventure #1
The Class Trip from the Black Lagoon.   Brush your teeth with shoe polish, survive a ride with Mr. Fenderbender, the scary bus driver. Afterward swat mosquitoes as large as Count Dracula. Finally try having fun when your teacher is mean Mrs. Green.
Adventure #2
The Talent Show from the Black Lagoon.   It's time for the school talent show. Too bad your best talent is squirting milk from your nose. Even worse, your mom makes you take piano lessons from smelly Mrs. Fumble and no one said that there would be millions of people watching.
Adventure #3
The Class Election from the Black Lagoon.   Everyone has to run for something in the class election. But you'd rather run for your life since you are running against Doris who bought the whole class's votes with ice cream -- even your friends. And if you lose the elections, they might vote you out of school.
Adventure #4
The Science Fair from the Black Lagoon.   Mrs. Green says everyone has to invent something for the science fair, but Hubie would rather invent a way to get out of it. He's trying to decide between cloning himself or building a laugh machine. He'd better figure something out soon or Mrs. Green may fail him.

Adult Book Club

The Schoolcraft Community Library offers a "no pressure" reading club for adults who would like to just show up and share their ideas about major aspects of a monthly book selection. One group will discuss Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, beginning on January 25 at 1 pm. If there is enough interest, a second group will meet on the last Monday of each month at 6 pm. The first book for the evening group will be Color of Water by James McBride. Future book selections will be made from nominated suggestions from the group or their discussion leaders. Please join us for some lively discussion.

Crochet Club

Are you an avid crocheter, or have you always wanted to learn how to crochet? Join the Library Crochet Club on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:00 pm. All levels of experience are welcome!
