BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2006-2007 ... SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd, 2007 -- 10:00 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M. @ SCHOOLCRAFT HIGH SCHOOL PAC. - This is the 13th annual Battle of the Books event hosted by the Schoolcraft Community Library. Come watch students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades from Schoolcraft and Vicksburg schools amaze you with their knowledge about the following books:

halfway to the Sky by Kimberly Bradley, Juliet Dove, Queen of Love by Bruce Coville, Rodzina by Karen Cushman, The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois, The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, The Warm Place by Nancy Farmer, If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon by Ellen Levine, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson byBette Bao Lord, Always Inventing: a Photobiography of Alexander Graham Bell by Tom L. Matthews, Bernie Magruder and the Bats in the Belfry by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Rascal by Sterling North, Once on this Island by Gloria Whelan.

These students have been reading and studying these books since October 23rd with the help of their coaches who are parents, grandparents, teachers and former battlers. So, come join the fun. You can watch one battle or more, whatever suits your fancy. The Grand Battle is Thursday, February 8th at 7 P.M. where the final two teams will compete for the trophy.

Valentine Heart and Bow VALENTINE'S DAY PRESCHOOL STORYHOUR ... The Schoolcraft Community Library will host a Valentine's Day Preschool Story hour for children ages 3-5 years. It will be held Wednesday, February 14th from 10-10:45 A.M. Pre-registration is required and space is limited so call the library today at 679-5959 and reserve a spot. BOOKS NEEDED ... The Schoolcraft Community Library is now collecting books from patrons in preparation for their Spring Book Sale, which will be held Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st. If you are cleaning out closets, bookshelves etc. please consider bringing your discards to the Schoolcraft Community Library. The funds will be used to support the Summer Reading Program. Please NO TEXTBOOKS, NO READER'S DIGEST CONDENSED VOLUMES and NO ENCYCLOPEDIAS. Many thanks for your help.

Battle of the Books BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2006-2007 UPDATE:   The 13th annual Battle of the Books hosted by the Schoolcraft Community Library, will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 at the Schoolcraft High School PAC from 10 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. For those of you who have never attended one of these events you are missing a real treat. This year there are 32 teams who have read a list of 12 titles and are readying themselves to compete against one another to see which team has learned the most information about these 12 books. These teams consist of 5 to 7 players from 4th, 5th and 6th grades and 1 or more coaches. These coaches consist of parents, grandparents, teachers and former battlers. There are 4 Preliminary Battles and 2 Semi Final Battles culminating in a Grand Battle to be held in the same location at 7 P.M. on Thursday, February 8th, 2007. So, mark your calendars and come watch these amazing kids dazzle you with their knowledge!

BROWN BAG STORYHOUR - There will be a Brown Bag Storyhour for those students in Young Fives and Kindergarten on Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 from 11:10-11:50 A.M. Students remember to bring a brown bag lunch, a smile and listening ears. (no red or purple drinks please)

* TumbleBook - You can now access TumbleBook Library for kids from the library's web page by clicking on the TumbleBook link. TumbleBook is a collection of animated, talking picture books and TumblePuzzles and Tumble Games. These are created from existing picture books which have been licensed from children's book publishers and converted into the TumbleBook format. You can play TumbleBook at the library, from home, or even while on vacation!!! This is an exciting new offering at the Schoolcraft Community Library and we hope parents and kids will take advantage of it. ENJOY!!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS ... Friday, October 20th, 2006 thru Thursday, February 8th, 2007 ... The Schoolcraft Community Library will be hosting its annual Battle of the Books competition once again this year. This competition is for students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades and students read from a booklist of 12 books from different genres. Parent coaches are needed for each team of 5-7 students. The booklist release date is Friday, October 20th and the booklist can be found at the Schoolcraft Upper Elementary Library, the Schoolcraft Community Library, the Vicksburg District Library and Tobey, Indian Lake and Sunset Elementary schools. Those interested in coaching will also find Coaches Packets available at these locations at the time of the booklist release. BROWN BAG STORYHOUR ... The Schoolcraft Community Library will be offering once again their monthly Brown Bag Storyhour to those students in Young Fives and Kindergarten. The first Brown Bag Storyhour of the school year will begin on Wednesday, October 18th. The storyhour will run from 11:10 A.M. to 11:50 A.M. so that students from both morning and afternoon classes may attend. The students in the morning classes may ride the "town" bus to the library, but transportation home or to school for after noon students will be the parent's responsibility. Pre registration is not required and students should bring a lunch, a smile and good listening ears for a special, fun reading time. Please NO RED OR PURPLE DRINKS! The dates for additional Brown Bag Storyhours are as follows: November 15th, December 13th, January 17th, February 14th, March 14th, April 18th, and May 9th. I hope many of you will put these dates on your calendars and join us for a fun-filled time each month at a program designed just for Young Fives and Kindergarteners! QSAC: Quality Service Audit Checklist
-SCHOOLCRAFT LIBRARY ATTAINS "ESSENTIAL LEVEL" OF QUALITY SERVICES FROM LIBRARY OF MICHIGAN - The Schoolcraft Community Library is proud to announce that it is one of 10 Class II libraries in Michigan who have qualified for the Essential Level requirements from the Quality Services audit checklist known as QSAC. There are seven categories of achievement which include human resources, governance/administration, services, collections development, technology, facilities and equipment and public relations/marketing. By focusing on these key areas the Schoolcraft Library has demonstrated a strong commitment to customer service. There are 78 class libraries in the State of Michigan and so the Schoolcraft Community Library is proud to have been one of the first 10 to have achieved this goal.

NOTE: LASER JET CARTRIDGE RECYCLING PROGRAM ... The Schoolcraft Community Library regrets to inform its patrons that the Laser Jet Recycling Program has once again been discontinued. You can still recycle your ink jet cartridges and any old cell phones as well in the bags provided at the library, but laser jet cartridges will no longer be accepted. You may be able to dispose of them through Office Max or there is a recycling center near the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds. Many thanks for your support of this program while it lasted.
