BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP --- Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac --- Thursday, March 1 - 4 P.M. --- The Schoolcraft Community Library will be hosting a book discussion group at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo on March 1st for TEENS and ADULTS. The book they will be discussing is Code Talker - A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac. This book brings to life the amazing story of the Navajo Code Talkers who were a crucial part of the U.S. effort during World War II. These men sent messages back and forth in unbreakable code using their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war and with their code saved countless American lives. Their story is told through this fictional tale of Ned Begay. His grueling journey is eye-opening and inspiring. Code Talker honors all of those young men who dared to serve and it honors the culture and language of the Navajo Indians while also speaking eloquently of the brutal realities of war. The book can be checked out at the Schoolcraft Community Library. Registration would be appreciated so we can plan for our book discussion on March 1st. Call the library at 679-5959 to register and reserve a copy of the book.

... After a snow delay, rescheduled dates for Preliminary Battles 3 & 4 , Semi Finals and the Grand Battle, the Battle of the Books has finally drawn to a close. Thursday evening, February 8, 2007 hosted the final 2 Preliminary Battles. Then after an exciting Tie Breaker session, we finally had 8 more teams ready to go on to Semi Final Battles on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Berean Baptist Church.
... The final sixteen teams "battling" in the Semi Final Battles were Book Bandits Last Shot, Diamond Minds, First Edition, The Babbling Whijirabroth, PJammin' Penguins, Paperback Players, Nerds not the Candy-Chocolate Edition, Quizzical Queens, Book Battalion, Boogie Woogie Bookworms, The Bookmobile, Indian Lake Aztecs, Pretty Pink Panthers, Disney Readas, Reading Rascals and . . . the End.
... The two teams emerging from the Semi Finals were Book Battalion and Quizzical Queens. Both teams were well prepared for the Grand Battle which immediately followed the Semi Finals Saturday afternoon. After a tense 35-40 minutes the Quizzical Queens ended up with the title "winner" and the trophy, which once engraved with their name, will reside at their Upper Elementary School library until next year's Battle of the Books.

... Congratulations to the Quizzical Queens!!!! Also, I applaud ALL the students and their coaches who participated in Battle of the Books for their hard work in preparation for "battle day".

I would also like to personally thank all those who stepped up and helped with all the set up as well as clean up for "Battle" on Saturday at the Berean Baptist church. It was greatly appreciated. Many thanks also to all those who willingly and cheerfully adjusted to the many changes that had to take place this last week to allow Battle of the Books to happen in a timely manner.
